How to Choose Children’s Jewelry With Confidence
A Comprehensive Safety Guide for Parents Who Want Facts, Not Assurances

A baby’s first piece of jewelry should feel like a precious keepsake, not a question mark. What materials are safe for children’s jewelry? What areas of jewelry do you need to be aware of that can cause irritation for an infant or toddler? We are going to answer these questions and help you have confidence when gifting your child a bracelet, necklace, ring, or set of earrings.

Baby jewelry safety is fundamentally a risk-management topic with three overlapping safety classes:

  • Mechanical safety – the main issues to look out for are sharp edges, pinch points, and breakage.
  • Material safety – the materials to look out for are lead, cadmium, arsenic, and chemical residues.
  • Dermal safety – the main issues to be aware of are allergens, and improper fit.

What can your jewelry brand, their manufacturers, and yourself do to minimize and eliminate these risks? Follow along with our children's jewelry safety guide to learn.

Baby Jewelry Mechanical Safety

Just because something is shiny and beautiful does not mean your 1 year old child will understand how to respect her new piece of jewelry. To protect from earring backs disjoining unintentionally, ensure you purchase screw back earrings specifically developed for children by a well-established, reputable brand.

How do we keep your child safe from sharp edges?
Tiny Blessings’ team research and develop highly specialized “children-specific designs” and manufacturing processes that soften or round sharp edges to ensure the safest possible jewelry. This process creates exquisite jewelry with no pinch points where hair or skin could get caught. For loved ones, it is always best practice to remove jewelry while sleeping, and supervise any time a child is wearing jewelry.

Baby Jewelry Materials Safety

Watch out for potential material and even some chemical safety risks that can be prevalent in cheap jewelry from less credible brands. High-end jewelry brands for adults always use the highest quality materials and know what alloys to avoid. Children-specific high-end jewelry brands surpass even these standards by removing additional metals and chemical processing residues. This protects children directly from all issues–even those that normally would not affect adults. There are quite a few metals and materials that have traditionally been used in jewelry manufacturing that have been found to cause allergic reactions to skin.

The chemical elements that pose a threat and/or are likely to cause skin irritation; Cadmium, antimony, lead, nickel and arsenic. Cadmium and arsenic are carcinogenic contaminants of both the zinc and copper mining and refining processes. Lead is a cheap product alternative, because it is soft and easy to shape, even though it has known carcinogenic effects. Lead is most often used in costume jewelry and low-quality artisan jewelry. Antimony is a serious toxin with a similar compound to arsenic. Cadmium and antimony can be commonly found on the soldering joints of jewelry and when in contact with skin can be released into the skin over time. Tiny Blessings mainly uses metal bonding techniques that do not require the addition of solder alloys in order to protect children from that risk. For all other soldering, we use cadmium-free and antimony-free solder.

What should you do, as a diligent parent or loved one, to protect your child from material risks in children's jewelry?
Purchase from high-end children’s jewelry brands, that have been in business for a long time, and produce the highest quality products. The safest material options are solid 14k+ gold, solid sterling silver, titanium, and platinum.

Baby Jewelry Allergen Safety

Keeping your child safe from irritation with baby jewelry is often a matter of material and quality. If your child experiences irritation from jewelry (especially earrings) it is likely due to a very common nickel allergy. Nickel exposure is the leading driver[1] of jewelry-related allergic contact dermatitis. Dermatologists only recommend wearing jewelry that is nickel-free, hypoallergenic, or made from high-quality metals.

What is a Hypoallergenic Material?

Hypoallergenic is a descriptor for something that is designed to cause less allergies. For example, with dogs, hypoallergenic means that the dog does not give off dander that causes skin or bronchial irritation to people. In jewelry, hypoallergenic refers to skin irritation and allergic reactions to various low quality metals and contaminants (from less expensive or poor manufacturing processes) transferring to your skin. However, the level of contaminant is not standardized in jewelry, which means the claim can be applied to almost anything; So pay attention to metals and materials purity.

Dermatologists recommend these materials:

Tiny Blessings Bracelet
  • Solid 14K+ Gold: Hypoallergenic and high quality, solid gold is durable and gorgeous, making it perfect for daily wear.
  • Solid Sterling Silver: Sterling silver is the highest quality of silver available in terms of beauty and strength.
  • Titanium: Known for its incredible strength-to-weight ratio, titanium is hypoallergenic, durable, and lightweight.
  • Platinum: A very high quality metal with hypoallergenic properties.

Sizing and Securing

Proper fit and sizing may not seem like safety features at first glance, but this can make all the difference. If a young ice skater wears skates that are too small, she may loosen them for relief, compromising support. Or she may continue skating in pain, increasing the risk of injury from ill-fitting equipment. Having the right look and fit are important for your child to be comfortable in jewelry too.

What ensures the right look and fit in children's jewelry?
Specific design and accurate sizing decisions made with children in mind. That means proper components (screw backs, post sizes, size options) for children's comfort and true fit.

Properly sizing and securing your child’s jewelry is the best way to protect your child from themselves. Make sure to prioritize high quality screwbacks[2] as they are the highest standard of earring backs for comfort and protection.

If a bracelet doesn't fit correctly your child may tug at it. Tiny Blessings has over 10 different sizes for their bracelets, giving customers perfect fit assurance. If you are unsure of your child's bracelet size you can use a tool provided by the jewelry brand. Tiny Blessings has our child wrist sizing tool.

Your child's safety and comfort are the highest priority, so don’t compromise or overlook getting the correct sizing and fit, it will benefit your child.

Expert Advice from a Metallurgist on Children's Jewelry Safety

It is important to consider that metal safety is both a product of metal content and metal release. In other words, the purity of metal and the time of exposure to the body. Measuring metal release can be very difficult and is especially tricky for plated metal alloys. For example: "Cadmium XRF measurements for real-world (inhomogeneous) metal samples generally have poor accuracy"[3]. Other materials may seem ok, like surgical grade steel, but will still contain harmful materials. In a published EN 1811 artificial-sweat test, 316L stainless steel released 0.28 µg/cm²/week of nickel–enough to exceed the piercing threshold (0.2 µg/cm²/week)"[4] Most bone surgeries are moving away from surgical grade steel into titanium structuring for this exact reason.

Is Surgical-grade Stainless Steel a safe material?
Surgical-grade Stainless Steel is not nickel-free (contains anywhere from 8%-14% nickel on average) making surgical-grade steel an unsuitable material for children's jewelry–especially when considering sensitive skin and pierced ears.

The best way to avoid unsafe materials altogether is to purchase high quality solid materials from trusted brands; solid 14k gold, solid sterling silver, titanium, platinum.

Children's Jewelry Safety Recommendations from a Pediatrician

Children’s doctors are in agreement with Tiny Blessings to have a keen focus on the safety of your children. We recommend doing everything in your power to ensure the health and safety of your children. Avoid neck-worn items for children under 3 years old, keep sharp pieces of jewelry away from children, and remove jewelry when the baby is sleeping or unattended. "For young children… select an earring with a screw locking mechanism that reduces the risk of the earring back coming off and becoming a hazard," Dr. Swick, M.D., and pediatrician at Riley Children's Health.[5] Tiny Blessings works conscientiously in manufacturing and finishing to certify the highest quality of screwback earrings.

A Gemologist's Perspective on Children's Jewelry Safety

Gems are classified by their hardness and luster. In children’s jewelry the biggest concerns are gems being damaged, cracked, or coming loose off of the setting. This occurs due to the hardness profile of the gem and the setting that is used. Glue failures and weak metal prongs can lead to a hazard for your child.

How do you avoid buying a gem that could break or detach from the product?
Buy from a well-established, reputable brand that specializes in children’s jewelry. At Tiny Blessings, we use only the best gems that are scratch resistant and have very high hardness. Our gems are specifically designed for children to avoid snagging on hair and clothing as well as high quality setting that will ensure gems do not come loose.

Will the gems cause allergies?
The Swarovski® Advanced Crystal that we use is 100% child-safe, lead-free, and nickel-free. They are strong, highly resistant to damage, and safe! Tiny Blessings goes to great lengths to ensure that all jewelry we provide for children is worry-free.

Dermatologist Guidance for Safe Children's Jewelry

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends this when it comes to children's jewelry; "To avoid [allergen] exposure, only wear jewelry that is nickel-free, hypoallergenic, made from metals such as… 14+ karat yellow gold, pure sterling silver, or platinum."[1] Following these guidelines, your child can enjoy her jewelry without irritation or inflammation.

How do you keep your child safe from sharp edges, pinch points, and skin damage?
Buy from an industry-leading brand that designs specifically for children. Tiny Blessings, for example, has softened the edges of our charms specifically for children, so hair will not get stuck and skin will not be pinched. Dermatologists' recommend all of Tiny Blessings materials.

The package is great for a gift (her first mint box), and the silver chain is shiny and the perfect size for a toddler. This is my three-year-old girl’s birthday gift, and I want to order one more for my boy. I hope the silver stays shiny for a long time. I was looking for the one wasn’t too expensive or too cheap and this one is perfect in terms of both quality and price.
